The SVQ is a nationally recognised qualification which assures employers and service users that the person they trust with the care of their children has proven knowledge and abilities and is capable of taking care of that child in a day to day or emergency situation.
The Playworker gains the opportunity to prove, test and update their skills and knowledge, achieving a national qualification in a growing area of expertise. S/he can work at their own pace, in their workplace whilst enhancing their career prospects and gaining confidence in their own performance. The SVQ in Playwork is the only current qualification which deals with children and young people between the ages of four to sixteen in a play setting.

Qualification for Vocational Assessors
A1 Assess candidates using a range of methods
Playwork Level 2
Playwork Level 2 is designed for Playworkers and consists of six mandatory units. There are two optional units that the candidate can choose to do.
Candidates are required to collect evidence from their work based experience to produce a portfolio. On average, a Playwork Level 2 qualification takes approximately 12 months.
Scottish Social Services Council look for this level to be held by workers who have delegated responsibility for providing care and support to children.
Playwork Level 3
Playwork Level 3 is designed for experienced Playworkers. There are five mandatory units, which must be completed. The candidate then chooses four optional units from a list of twelve. A total of nine units must be completed.
Candidates are required to collect evidence from their work based experience to produce a portfolio. On average a level 3 takes approximately 18 months to complete.
Scottish Social Services Council look for this level to be held by workers who identify and meet the care, support and learning needs of children and contribute to the development and quality assurance of informal learning and/or curriculum. They may also be responsible for the supervision of other workers.
Playwork Level 4
SQA will launch this new qualification early 2006. We will not be offering it immediately.

Assessor Qualifications to support the SVQ in Playwork
A1 Assess candidates using a range of methods
This qualification is the recommended requirement for anyone working as an Assessor for the vocational qualification.
This award will enable the candidate to assess candidates against agreed standards of competence using a range of assessment methods, give candidates feedback on assessment decisions and contribute to the internal quality assurance processes.
Fair Play Training offer support and guidance through the qualification, visiting the candidate on-site and providing underpinning knowledge training as required. Induction training is provided for the Assessor, looking at the assessment tools and techniques, judging the candidates evidence and supporting the candidate through their SVQ process. Ongoing support is provided for the Assessor during their qualification and beyond.
