Making Choices

An Orientation Programme for those considering a career in Early Years Care and Education and Playwork.

Making Choices is for people who are interested in working with children but who require more information to make an informed choice. They may be unsure about

  • whether they have the skills to work with children
  • which area of work with children they would like to work in.

The programme was jointly developed by the Playwork Unit and the Early Years National Training Organisation. All participants are entitled to receive a formal Certificate of Attendance which is nationally recognised.

An Introduction to Playwork

Introducing Playwork has been devised as an introduction course for holiday playscheme training and as an induction programme for wider use in playwork and childcare. The course aims to enable workers intending to work with 4-16 year old children to recognise and extend their skills to work effectively with children and develop good working practice.

The introduction includes

  • Play and Playwork
  • Supporting children’s play
  • Teamwork
  • Health and Safety
  • Child Protection
  • Building Relationships

These are the key factors of working with children in a range of settings, making a good introduction to working with children. The course is endorsed by SkillsActive, the Sector Skills Council and can be used as the basis of an underpinning knowledge course and a step towards a Playwork Level 2 qualification.
