The Play Pals programme is aimed at training pupils in P6/7 to help younger pupils solve disputes in a peaceful way.
Play Pals can offer children a range of Quick Fix methods for resolving these play problems and are also in a position to offer a simple mediating role where children are given an opportunity to 'talk things through' to an agreed solution.
Disputes can cover areas such as:not playing fairly, being too rough in the game, not taking turns, being left out etc.
Here, a Play Pal will:
- find a quiet place to talk to children who are having a problem
- let each child in turn say what is upsetting them
- help the children look at different ways of solving the problem
- encourage the children to choose a solution and try it out
- talk to the children later to see how they are getting on.
The Play Pal programme runs over 6-8 one hour sessions and works best with small dedicated groups of pupils who like a challenge!
NOT OUT!
What is the Not Out! workshop?
Not Out! is a Theatre-in Education programme aimed at helping ‘troubled' and ‘troublesome' young people explore the world of ‘bad behaviour' in school.
It has been adapted from work undertaken by Thompson et al on applied theatre techniques within the prisons and probation service and takes young people on a journey through the life of Jo Blaggs – a boy (or girl) ‘on the edge', at odds with staff, with himself and with the world around him. Jo Blaggs has an axe to grind and school is where he sharpens the blade. The aim of Not Out! is to get Jo's head ‘sorted' so he can climb down from the threat of exclusion and make the most of his time in school.
